A water well is a private water system built to reach groundwater. It is a cased hole with a pump that lifts water to a pressure tank, which then feeds the house. That is the mechanical answer. It is the easy part.
The harder part is what owning one actually means. A household on municipal water is a customer of a utility that tests, treats, and maintains the supply.
A household on a private well has no such utility standing behind it. The owner fills that role instead. Nobody tests the water, checks the pump, or inspects the casing unless the owner arranges it.
What a water well actually is
The National Ground Water Association frames it simply. A well works like a straw reaching into a glass, where the glass is the aquifer holding groundwater underground Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide. The straw itself is a cased hole.
The well casing is the vertical pipe lining that hole. It does real work beyond holding the hole open. It "prevents surface water and shallow groundwater from prematurely entering the well" Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide.
A modern drilled well carries several more named parts, all working together. Oklahoma State Extension's own diagram of a typical well names them Source 3: Oklahoma State University Extension, Well Water Basics:
- A well cap.
- The well casing.
- A pitless adapter.
- A distribution line.
- Bentonite grout, sealing the casing into the borehole.
- A drop pipe.
- A submersible pump.
- A well screen at the bottom.
- A gravel pack around the screen.
The pump sits down in the water on the drop pipe. It pushes water up to a pressure tank at the surface, the component that keeps water flowing to the fixtures between pump cycles.
Where the water comes from, and why that differs from a municipal supply
A well does not create water. It reaches an aquifer, a layer of saturated rock or soil that already holds groundwater, and lifts what is there.
That is a different source than a municipal system. A municipal system typically draws from a river, a reservoir, or a larger shared well field. It runs the water through centralized treatment before it reaches anyone's tap.
Not every well got there the same way. Oklahoma's extension guide notes that older wells were often hand-dug and "lined with rocks or bricks, if at all" Source 3: Oklahoma State University Extension, Well Water Basics. Those wells were shallow and wide enough to be vulnerable to whatever runs off the surface nearby.

The ownership line nobody explains up front
Here is the part a construction glossary skips. Two sources state it independently, in almost the same words:
- Oklahoma State Extension: "Unlike public water systems, which are regulated by federal and state agencies, the quality and safety of private well water is the sole responsibility of the well owner" Source 3: Oklahoma State University Extension, Well Water Basics.
- Texas Well Owner Network: household well owners "are responsible for ensuring that their well water is safe to drink." Unlike a public system, "the government does not routinely test household well water to make sure it is safe to drink" Source 1: Texas Well Owner Network, Well Owner's Guide to Water Supply.
That responsibility starts at construction and does not end there. A driller may test the water once, when the well goes in. After that, the same Texas guide is direct: "it is the well owner who is responsible for making sure the water is safe" Source 1: Texas Well Owner Network, Well Owner's Guide to Water Supply. That responsibility holds for as long as the well stays in service.
NGWA extends that logic to the well itself, not just the water. It "does not recommend that individuals drill their own wells" Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide. It calls for a qualified water well system professional instead.
Building the system is professional work. Watching over it afterward belongs to the owner.
What that actually means day to day
Ownership here is not abstract. It breaks down into a short, concrete list:
- Test the water on a schedule. Nobody else will, and nothing forces it.
- Watch the pump and pressure tank. They are mechanical, and they are the parts most likely to eventually need attention.
- Keep an eye on the wellhead. A cracked well cap or a casing that has settled below grade is a way for contamination to get in ahead of the water anyone actually wants.
- Notice when something has changed. A shift in taste, smell, or color is usually a reason to test, not a reason to wait.
None of it requires special training. It requires knowing the job exists and belongs to the owner.
