    Septic System Diagram: Every Part, Labeled, and What Each One Fails At

    Most septic diagrams stop at naming the parts. This one also says which part is known for which failure, and which three parts on the drawing may simply not be on your property.

    30-second answer

    A conventional septic system has four parts in a line, and water moves through them in one direction.

    • Building sewer. One pipe carries everything out of the house.
    • Septic tank. A buried, watertight box that separates solids from liquid.
    • Distribution box. Splits the liquid evenly between drainfield lines.
    • Drainfield and soil. Gravel trenches spread the liquid, and the soil beneath them treats it.

    EPA's homebuyer guide gives the flow in four steps. "All water runs out of your house from one main drainage pipe into a septic tank." The tank "is a buried, water-tight container" whose job "is to hold the wastewater long enough for solids to settle." Then "liquid wastewater exits the tank and is spread evenly throughout the drainfield, usually through a distribution box" Source 1: U.S. EPA, SepticSmart Program, A Homebuyer's Guide to Septic Systems.     Three things on the drawing that may not be on your lot

    A diagram shows a complete, modern system. Yours may be older or simpler. Three labeled items are conditional.

    If you cannot match the drawing to your yard, start with how to locate a septic tank. The as-built drawing on file with the county shows what was actually installed.

    Where an aerobic system diverges

    EPA adds one sentence to the four-step flow: "Systems with more advanced treatment may have an additional component between the septic tank and drainfield" Source 1: U.S. EPA, SepticSmart Program, A Homebuyer's Guide to Septic Systems. That is the aerobic branch. An aerobic unit adds mechanical aeration to the tank and a control panel above grade, which is why it carries a service contract and a conventional system does not.

    What the diagram cannot show

    A drawing can label the soil. It cannot show the soil working. The drainfield is pipe and gravel on paper, but the treatment happens in the unsaturated soil beneath it, where, in EPA's words, the wastewater "percolates into the soil," which reclaims it "by naturally removing harmful bacteria, viruses, and some nutrients" Source 1: U.S. EPA, SepticSmart Program, A Homebuyer's Guide to Septic Systems.     Requirements vary by county. The riser and port rules quoted above are Texas rule text, and other states differ. Your county health department has the final word on what a system on your property must have.

    Common questions

    What are the main parts of a septic system?

    EPA describes four steps. One main drainage pipe carries all household wastewater to a buried, watertight septic tank. The tank holds it long enough for solids to settle and grease to float. Liquid leaves the tank and is spread through the drainfield, usually through a distribution box. The soil under the drainfield then removes harmful bacteria, viruses, and some nutrients.

    Does every septic system have a distribution box?

    No. The National Environmental Services Center says a distribution box is often part of a conventional system, not always. Some layouts run a single line with no box at all. The as-built drawing on file with the county, or a septic professional, is the way to confirm what a given system has.
