    An aerobic treatment system does something a conventional gravity septic tank does not. It pumps air into the wastewater to speed up treatment. A conventional tank never needs to do that. The control panel is the piece that makes that mechanical process automatic. It runs the aerator on a cycle. On most systems, it also runs the alarm circuit that watches for a fault.

    Texas's on-site sewage facility rule defines maintenance for these systems the same way, by naming the parts a provider actually services: "replacement of pumps, filters, aerator lines, valves, or electrical components" Source 1: Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, 30 TAC Chapter 285.     What the alarm and its lights are actually telling you

    The alarm exists to tell someone when the system stops doing its job. Regulation is specific about how it has to do that. Texas requires this class of tank to carry "an audible and visible high water alarm," on its own separate power circuit from the pump it is watching Source 1: Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, 30 TAC Chapter 285. Both signals matter. A light alone can go unnoticed for days. A sound alone gives no clue what triggered it if nobody is home to hear it start.

    EPA's guidance for homeowners on these systems names the underlying pattern directly.     None of this tells you which part failed. A tripped alarm could mean a stuck float switch, a blower that has stopped running, or a genuine high water condition heading toward a backup. That diagnosis is exactly the work a licensed maintenance provider is trained and required to do.

    What's actually yours, and what belongs to your maintenance provider

    Texas's rule text draws the professional line by title, not by task difficulty. A "maintenance provider" is defined as an individual who maintains on-site sewage facilities for compensation. A "maintenance technician" is registered to do that work under one Source 1: Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, 30 TAC Chapter 285. Texas requires an aerobic system's owner to keep one of those under contract. Its rule sets a deadline. The system's initial service policy runs two years. After that, the owner must get a maintenance contract within 30 days, or maintain the system personally Source 1: Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, 30 TAC Chapter 285. Check your own state's rule; the exact contract window varies. "Personally" still does not mean opening the panel. It means the paperwork and inspection cadence, which is itself specialized enough that most owners contract it out.

    What a maintenance visit actually checks gives a sense of the real scope of this equipment.     When to call, and what to say

    Call your maintenance provider any time the alarm sounds, a panel light changes state, or the blower's normal hum stops or changes pitch. You do not need to know which of those it is before you call. Telling the provider what you noticed, and when, is the useful part. Diagnosing it is theirs. If the alarm is active and you cannot reach your provider quickly, reduce water use in the house until someone arrives, the same as you would for any full or failing tank.
