What actually drives the 20-year number

Four things separate the two systems' real cost, and only one of them shows up on an install quote.
The install-cost gap is mostly mechanical parts and electrical work. A conventional system is a tank, a pipe, and a gravity-fed leach field. It has no pumps, no power, and no moving parts. An aerobic system adds an aerator.
The aerator pumps oxygen into the tank to feed bacteria that break down solids faster. Most units also add a disinfection unit and a pump, to spray or drip treated effluent across a smaller field. Every one of those parts is extra material, extra labor, and extra electrical work. That is the entire install-cost gap in the section above.
The maintenance contract is the structural difference, not just an added cost. Texas rule 30 TAC §285 is direct about this. After an initial two-year service policy, "the owner of an aerobic treatment system for a single family residence shall either obtain a maintenance contract within 30 days of the transfer or maintain the system per manufacturer's specifications" Source 1: Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, 30 TAC Chapter 285.
In practice, that second option rarely stands on its own. The system's electrical and mechanical parts are proprietary, so most owners end up in a contract anyway. A conventional system carries no matching rule, because it has no mechanical part that needs one.

Electricity is a real cost this comparison cannot yet put a number on. The aerator runs continuously, to keep bacteria supplied with oxygen. It draws power a conventional tank never uses. No source in this research cleared the bar for a dollar figure here.
Retailer and utility listings state wattage, but not a verified annual cost. Multiplying an unsourced wattage by an unsourced electricity rate is exactly the kind of invented number this site does not publish. Treat this as a real, ongoing cost with no verified size yet, not as a cost that does not exist.

Do you actually get to choose?
Every comparison article implies a choice: pick the system you prefer. For a real share of readers, there is no choice to make.
Conventional systems need soil that can absorb and treat effluent on its own. A percolation test verifies that, before anyone digs. Where the soil fails that test, a conventional system is not an option, whatever the budget.
The cause might be poor drainage, a high water table, or too little usable soil depth. The property needs an alternative.
Aerobic is one of several a county may allow, alongside a mound system or a sand filter. A licensed site evaluator makes that call, not the homeowner.
Where soil passes and the lot is not tight, the choice is real. It is a genuine cost trade-off: a lower install cost and no recurring contract, against a system that can work on a smaller footprint. Where soil fails, the real question changes.

What can you do yourself, and what needs a professional?
Installing either system is professional-only in nearly every jurisdiction, and the aerobic system's mechanical and electrical parts are professional-only for service as well. What differs is how much of the routine work you can watch versus do.
Refilling disinfection tablets in an aerobic unit
Some units allow this from outside the tank, following the manufacturer manual exactly. Confirm your contract does not already include it before doing it yourself.
Watching the alarm light and the effluent color through the viewing port
Done from outside the tank with the lid closed. A cloudy or gray effluent color, or a lit alarm, is the sign to call your provider before the next scheduled visit.
Installing either system
Both systems require a permit and a licensed installer in nearly every jurisdiction. Ask for two itemized quotes and confirm which system type your soil actually qualifies for before comparing prices.
What the pro does: Site evaluation, tank and leach field or spray field placement, permitting, and connection to the house line, plus the aerator and disinfection unit on an aerobic system.
Aerator, blower, and disinfection-unit service
This is exactly what the mandatory maintenance contract pays for, and the electrical and mechanical components involved are not homeowner-serviceable.
What the pro does: Inspects the aerator and pump, checks electrical components, tests the chlorine supply, and files the required report with your local permitting authority.
Reading a maintenance-contract quote
A conventional system needs a good pump-out quote every few years. The pumping cost guide covers what drives that number, so it is not repeated here. An aerobic system needs the same discipline applied to a different kind of document: a maintenance contract you will likely sign for as long as you own the house.
A good aerobic contract itemizes, in writing, before you sign. It should state:
- How many inspections a year (three is standard, per the two providers on this page)
- Whether chlorine or disinfection service is included or billed separately
- The service-call rate for anything beyond routine inspection
- What happens to the contract at resale

- Ask directly what your provider does at closing.
- Get a second quote from another licensed provider, the same way you would for a pump-out.
- Confirm they service your specific aerator brand, since not every provider covers every manufacturer's unit.

- Check licensing and insurance.
- Ask for an itemized quote that separates the tank, the leach field, and permitting.
- Ask about a workmanship warranty.
- Get two quotes and compare them line against line, not by the total alone.
Regional and code reality
Everything specific on this page comes from Texas: the 30 TAC §285 maintenance-contract rule, and both named service providers. That is a real limit, stated rather than hidden.
Other states regulate aerobic systems differently. Some have no statewide maintenance-contract mandate at all, and leave the requirement to the county, or leave it optional. Again, your county health department has the final word on what applies to your property, on either system type.
One thing travels regardless of state: the mechanism itself. An aerobic system is permitted anywhere because it uses mechanical treatment to work on ground a conventional system cannot use. Mechanical parts need upkeep, and somebody has to pay for it.
