    A whole-house system is not one purchase. It is a sequence of stages, and your test result decides how many of them you actually need.

    The stages run in a fixed order. Largest particles go first, so each stage protects the one after it from fouling.

    A single sediment housing is within reach for a handy homeowner. A multi-stage train is not. It needs backwashing valves, a drain connection, and electrical for a UV lamp.

    Texas Well Owner Network is direct about it: whole-house systems usually need a professional to install and maintain them. Incorrect sizing is the most common DIY mistake.

    What "whole-house" means, and what it doesn't

    Two terms get used loosely, and the difference decides what a system does and what it costs. A point-of-use system sits at one faucet, usually the kitchen sink. It treats only the water drawn there.

    That split is also the cost split on this page. NGWA states it plainly: in published cost ranges, the higher figures apply to whole-house treatment and the lower figures to point-of-use treatment Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide 2021. Whole-house systems cost more because they are sized for your whole household's flow rate, not one tap's.

    The choice is not about which is better. It is about which contaminant you are treating. Sediment, iron, manganese, hardness, and hydrogen sulfide odor affect every tap, so treating them anywhere but whole-house leaves most of your water untouched.

    Arsenic, nitrate, and lead are usually cheaper to solve at the tap you drink from, because the water you drink and cook with is a small fraction of what a household uses. A whole-house reverse osmosis stage exists for the cases where point-of-use is not enough. It is priced at the top of every range on this page.

    Most homes end up with both: a whole-house train for the stages above, and a point-of-use stage under the kitchen sink for whatever is left. Neither one replaces the other. They answer different questions about the same water.

    The stage map: what treats what, and in what order

    A "whole-house filtration system" is not one piece of equipment. NGWA's term for it is a treatment train: a series of technologies in sequence, each addressing one or more water-quality problems Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide 2021.

    The order is not arbitrary. Texas Well Owner Network's rule is to install the stage that removes larger particles first Source 1: Texas Well Owner Network, Well Owner's Guide to Water Supply. NGWA gives the reason: whole-house sediment filters remove particulate specifically to reduce the maintenance load on the stages that follow Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide 2021. Grit fouls an iron filter's media the same way it fouls anything downstream of it.

    Sediment, first. Sand, silt, and rust particles. This stage protects every stage after it, and it is the cheapest one on this page. Your test does not need to name a contaminant for this stage to make sense. It protects the equipment, not a health question.

    Acid neutralizer, if your pH reads low. Water below pH 6.5 is corrosive. Arizona and EPA both publish 6.5 to 8.5 as the recommended range Source 3: University of Arizona Superfund, Well Owner's Guide. Arizona's symptom table routes low pH to acid-neutralizing filters, using calcite or calcite and magnesium oxide media, or to adding an alkaline chemical such as lime Source 3: University of Arizona Superfund, Well Owner's Guide.

    NGWA names the same mechanism from the health side. Below pH 7.0, water turns acidic enough to leach lead out of pipes, fittings, and solder. An acid-neutralizing system, corrected with a chemical like soda ash, is the standard fix Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide 2021.

    This is the stage a test-result reader misses most. A low-pH result rarely comes with a visible symptom.

    Iron and manganese, next. The iron filter guide covers which of the three iron presentations you have, and why the form decides the treatment class. This page names the stage and its place in the sequence. It does not re-derive that diagnosis.

    Hydrogen sulfide, the rotten-egg smell. Arizona's table names the cause plainly: excessive acidity, low oxygen in the source water, or hydrogen sulfide gas that occurs naturally in aquifers and sediments. Its treatment entry is oxidation during aeration, or chlorination with a particle filter, or an oxidizing filter followed by activated carbon.     That is why this stage sits near the acid-neutralizer stage rather than off on its own. The two mechanisms overlap in some wells.

    Water softener. The softener guide covers sizing it from your own hardness number, and the four things it does not remove. It sits after iron removal for a reason.

    Excess iron fouls a softener's resin bed. An iron problem left untreated shortens the life of the stage after it.

    UV disinfection, and reverse osmosis, last. UV disinfection needs clear, sediment-free water to work. That is why it sits downstream of the filtering stages.

    A whole-house reverse osmosis stage, where one is warranted at all, is priced and placed last. For most wells, a point-of-use RO tap at the kitchen sink answers the same health question at a fraction of the whole-house cost.

    Two independently published guides put the ceiling for a full whole-house build higher: Angi puts a whole-house system at $1,500 to $10,000, and Fixr's whole-house filter-and-softener bundle spans the identical $1,500 to $10,000. That is the honest number for a property needing every stage on this page, including a whole-house reverse osmosis stage, and it is a different question from the typical-setup figure above, which does not include one.

    Three guides, compared rather than averaged. A spread that one source states and another does not is not a number anyone can check by averaging it away. HomeGuide's well-water-specific cost guide is the only one of the three that breaks installed cost out by contaminant.

    That makes it the primary source for the per-stage figures above. The acid-neutralizer, hydrogen-sulfide, and iron/manganese rows rest on that single source.

    They are flagged here as such: no second published guide with a matching per-contaminant breakdown was found for those three stages. The whole-house-system total, the softener figure, and the UV figure are corroborated across two or three guides each, listed in the sources below.

    One number worth knowing separately. SpringWell, a manufacturer, sells equipment factory-direct. It lists its own well-water iron filter at $2,125 to $2,550, its softener combination at $2,975 to $3,400, its chemical-injection system at roughly $1,186 on sale, and its calcite pH neutralizer at roughly $1,696 on sale (accessed August 2026). Those are equipment prices only, sold direct with optional financing.

    They do not include professional installation. That parts-versus-installed gap is usually the most useful thing a page like this can show. A manufacturer's factory-direct price and a contractor's installed quote are two different questions. Neither substitutes for the other.

    None of these guides can tell you your own number. Tank capacity, your county's disposal rules, how far the equipment sits from a drain, and whether your home already has a whole-house loop all move the total inside these ranges. Two itemized quotes, compared stage by stage, beat any published range.

    Size it to your own test, not to a bundle

    Every stage on this page answers a specific number on a water test. None of them answers a number you have not measured. The well water testing guide covers which parameters to run, and how often.

    The results decoder routes each exceedance on your report to the treatment class that addresses it. That includes the pH, total dissolved solids, sulfate, and chloride rows this guide's stages answer. EPA's secondary standards set pH at 6.5 to 8.5, total dissolved solids at 500 mg/L, and sulfate and chloride at 250 mg/L each Source 4: US EPA, Secondary Drinking Water Standards.

    A quote built from a bundle, not your test result, is the failure this page exists to prevent. A system sold as "whole-house filtration" with no softener listed will not touch a hardness number, whatever the box says. A system priced for hydrogen sulfide will not fix a water heater's failing anode rod. That produces the identical rotten-egg smell from one tap, and it needs a plumber, not a filtration stage.

    Read your test first. Then ask which stages above it actually calls for. Price a quote against that list, not against a package a salesperson assembled before seeing your numbers.

    Texas Well Owner Network states plainly that whole-house systems usually must be installed and maintained by professionals. Incorrect sizing is the most common DIY failure, and it shows up as poor filtration or low pressure rather than an obvious break.

    What the pro does: Sizes each stage to your flow rate and test result, runs a dedicated drain connection for backwash, wires the electrical a UV lamp needs, and sequences the stages correctly so each one protects the next.

    It depends entirely on which stages your water needs.
