    How do you shock a well with chlorine, safely?

    The procedure is not the hard part. The dose is, the method is, and the retest is the only thing that tells you whether any of it worked.

    Shock chlorination is putting a measured volume of chlorine solution into a well, circulating it through the system, holding it, then flushing and testing. The measured part is the difference between a procedure and pouring bleach down a hole.

    How much depends on two numbers: the depth of water standing in your well and the diameter of your casing. A six-inch well with fifty feet of water takes about ten cups of unscented household bleach Source 1: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Shock Chlorination of Wells ESC-059. The chemistry is a band, not a target: Michigan puts the working range at 50 to 500 parts per million, 200 ppm standard, and says exceeding it can damage the well or make the disinfection less likely to work Source 2: Michigan EGLE, Water Well Construction Manual.

    Hold it at least eight hours, flush it away from your septic system and anything growing, and plan on the water being out of use for twelve to twenty four hours Source 3: Texas Well Owner Network, Well Owner's Guide to Water Supply.

    Two things decide whether it is yours to do: the procedure is written for a sound well on a submersible pump, and for a first attempt. A jet pump, a damaged well, or one failed treatment makes it a contractor's job. And the smell of chlorine leaving the taps is not the result. A laboratory retest is.

    When shocking a well is the right move, and when it is the wrong one

    Shock chlorination answers a finding, not a season: a positive bacteria test, a well opened or serviced, flooding at the wellhead. NGWA is direct that it is not routine maintenance Source 4: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide 2021.

    Before you disinfect, find out whether the well is letting something in. This is the step that gets skipped, and skipping it is why some wells get chlorinated every spring forever. NGWA is explicit: when bacteria are detected, first determine whether a breach is admitting surface water, and if one is, repair it and then disinfect Source 4: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide 2021.

    That is a five minute look:

    • A cracked or missing cap
    • A casing ending at or below grade
    • A rotted vent screen
    • Water pooling after rain
    • A pit that floods

    Any one is a route in, and a well with one passes its retest and fails the next: you disinfected the water and left the door open.

    The other wrong first move is chlorinating a well that has failed before. Where repeated procedures are not enough, Texas has a driller pull the pump and swab the interior with brushes and chemicals made for it Source 3: Texas Well Owner Network, Well Owner's Guide to Water Supply. If chlorine has failed here once, more chlorine is not the answer.     Safety, and who should actually do this

    Four of the five sources here recommend hiring a professional, a pattern set out further down. One opens a door, narrowly: Texas says that if you want to do it yourself, follow its own publication Source 3: Texas Well Owner Network, Well Owner's Guide to Water Supply. That publication then states its scope. The method is for private wells with a properly functioning submersible pump only, on a jet pump or damaged system it will not work, and a drop in pressure once the pump runs is damage that sends you to a certified contractor Source 1: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Shock Chlorination of Wells ESC-059.

    The boundary is a list, not a matter of confidence, and every item on it is a stop.

    The two methods, and why a repeat is not the same as a first attempt

    There are two ways to get chlorine into a well. Almost nothing written for homeowners says so. Michigan names both, then constrains which goes where Source 2: Michigan EGLE, Water Well Construction Manual.

    Simple chlorination is adding a small volume of solution at the top of the well and circulating it into the distribution system. That is the method in every homeowner procedure, including the one this page routes you to:

    • Pour into the casing
    • Run the hose back down
    • Recirculate
    • Push it through the house

    Bulk displacement chlorination is preparing a predetermined volume of solution and pouring or pumping it in. It displaces the water sitting in the casing, the screen and the aquifer around the well, replacing that water rather than mixing with it. Michigan calls this the recommended method, as the most practical way to distribute chlorine throughout the well and the surrounding aquifer Source 2: Michigan EGLE, Water Well Construction Manual.

    Here is the rule, and it is the thing worth taking away from this page. Michigan restricts simple chlorination to existing water supplies, and when used on an existing well, to the first treatment only. If that first treatment fails to disinfect the well, the bulk displacement method should be used for all repeat treatments.     Two documents, and neither one acknowledges the other. The homeowner procedure is, in Michigan's taxonomy, simple chlorination. It does not say it is a first attempt, because it is not written alongside a second option.

    Michigan says the second attempt needs a different method, but is writing to contractors and never addresses the homeowner directly. Read together the answer is coherent, and it is not what either page says alone: the procedure a homeowner can do is the one you do once.

    The two do agree on where a failure goes. The homeowner procedure ends by saying that if disinfection attempts fail, the well may need to be cleaned before it is disinfected again, and to contact a contractor or the local health department Source 1: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Shock Chlorination of Wells ESC-059.

    Michigan's escalation is the bulk displacement method in professional hands. Texas describes the far end of it, where the pump comes out and the casing is scrubbed Source 3: Texas Well Owner Network, Well Owner's Guide to Water Supply. Three sources, one ladder, and the homeowner is on the bottom rung of it by design.

    Why the difference matters in practice: pouring solution into the top of a well and running it back through a hose mixes chlorine into the water column. It does not reliably reach the aquifer material just outside the screen, which is where a persistent bacterial population lives. That is the gap bulk displacement exists to close, and it is why a second identical attempt so often gives a second identical result.

    The dose is a band, not a number

    Two things get called the dose. The concentration the well water reaches is chemistry. The volume of bleach that gets it there is arithmetic on your well.

    The concentration is a range with a failure at each end. Michigan puts it between 50 and 500 parts per million, with 200 ppm as the standard Source 2: Michigan EGLE, Water Well Construction Manual. The floor is not what it takes to kill anything. It is what must survive the water's own demand.

    Organic matter, iron and biofilm all consume chlorine, so the starting concentration has to cover that demand and still leave a free residual of 50 ppm to disinfect with Source 2: Michigan EGLE, Water Well Construction Manual.

    The ceiling is where homeowner instinct goes wrong. Above 500 ppm the solution turns corrosive enough to damage submersible pumps and check valves, and the chlorine oxidises biofilm and scale into a hard layer it can no longer penetrate Source 2: Michigan EGLE, Water Well Construction Manual. More bleach is not a stronger version of the treatment. Past a point it is a worse one.

    What happens when you overdo it covers that in full, including something this page does not repeat: chlorine can mobilise arsenic in some aquifers.

    The volume takes two measurements. Texas A&M AgriLife sets it from the depth of water standing in the well and the casing diameter. Both matter: a 4-inch and a 24-inch well at the same depth hold very different amounts.

    Water depth is total depth minus the static water level, and if you do not know that level, the published instruction is to use total depth Source 1: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Shock Chlorination of Wells ESC-059. That overstates the volume, which lands you higher in the bleach column rather than under the floor.

    For the shape of it: a 6-inch well takes about 7 cups of unscented household bleach at 20 feet of water, 10 cups at 50 feet, 16 cups at 100 feet and 20 cups at 150 feet Source 1: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Shock Chlorination of Wells ESC-059. Read your own two numbers off the full table in that publication, not off this paragraph. A 4-inch, 8-inch or bored well takes a different column, and the point of the table is that one number does not fit every well.

    Use unscented bleach under six months old, mixed into a bucket of clean water before it goes in Source 1: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Shock Chlorination of Wells ESC-059.     Contact time, and how long the water is out of use

    Three numbers get quoted here and they read like a disagreement. They are not one. Eight hours is the minimum hold: once the chlorinated water has reached every fixture, the homeowner procedure leaves it in the plumbing at least that long, or overnight Source 1: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Shock Chlorination of Wells ESC-059.

    Twelve to twenty four hours is the window to plan for, which Texas gives as the time the system should be out of use Source 3: Texas Well Owner Network, Well Owner's Guide to Water Supply. That is not a longer contact time but the hold plus the flushing, and it decides which day you do this.

    Whether longer is better is genuinely disputed. Michigan says it is Source 2: Michigan EGLE, Water Well Construction Manual. Arizona says not to leave chlorine in the casing longer than prescribed Source 5: University of Arizona Superfund Research Program, Well Owner's Guide.

    They are optimising different risks, and that disagreement is resolved separately. In arsenic-prone areas Arizona governs.

    Bypass softeners and filters first. Disinfect them before reconnecting. And when you flush, keep the water away from your septic system, landscaping and any body of water Source 1: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Shock Chlorination of Wells ESC-059. A well's worth of chlorinated water in a drainfield is a slug of disinfectant arriving at a system that runs on bacteria.

    What the authorities will not hand you, and why

    Read the well guidance as a set and something odd shows up. Every major source names shock chlorination, says what it is for, then declines to tell you how and points elsewhere. NGWA says owners should use a water well system professional whenever possible, that disinfection involves many steps and could easily be done incorrectly, and that some states require a licensed professional Source 4: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide 2021.

    Texas says to have a licensed driller or pump installer conduct it, and points at a separate publication for anyone who will not Source 3: Texas Well Owner Network, Well Owner's Guide to Water Supply. Arizona treats the chemicals as work for trained personnel and points at two fact sheets Source 5: University of Arizona Superfund Research Program, Well Owner's Guide. Michigan gives the procedure in full but writes it to contractors, naming knowledge only a driller or pump installer may possess Source 2: Michigan EGLE, Water Well Construction Manual.

    Each does it once, in one line of a long document. Read one and it looks like ordinary caution. Read four and it is a pattern with a reason. The risk here is not the pouring, it is the judgment either side of it, whether the well is sound, whether the method fits the attempt, and whether the result means anything.

    The retest is the only thing that says whether it worked

    The chlorine smell leaving your taps tells you the flushing is done. It says nothing at all about whether the disinfection succeeded. Treating it as the finish line is the most common way this procedure ends badly.

    Michigan states the completion criterion in one sentence. The only way to assure that the disinfection process is complete is to sample the raw water once all treatment residual is flushed out. If the sample still shows coliform bacteria, the disinfection process should be reviewed to determine which steps need to be repeated or enhanced Source 2: Michigan EGLE, Water Well Construction Manual. The homeowner procedure says the same thing as an instruction: do not drink the water until it has been tested, and before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice or preparing food, have it tested by a certified laboratory Source 1: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Shock Chlorination of Wells ESC-059.

    Two details decide whether that test means anything:

    • Wait until the chlorine is fully gone, because residual chlorine suppresses bacterial growth in the sample and can hand you a clean result from a well that is not clean.
    • Use a laboratory certified by your state, for the same reason a lender or health department will only accept one: an uncertified result is a number without standing.

    What to test for and how often covers the sampling side properly, including the holding-time rule that catches most people out. For this purpose the panel is narrow: it is the total coliform test that the positive result came from, run again.

    If it comes back positive after a correctly executed first treatment, that is information rather than a failure. It means the problem is not the water sitting in the well. It is a breach letting something in, biofilm the chlorine could not reach, or a contamination source near the well that will keep supplying it. All three of those are diagnosed at the well, not in a jug, and all three are where a licensed water well contractor earns their fee.

    Again, your county health department has the final word. It is worth one more call at this point rather than one less.     How do you shock a well for bacteria?

    Put a measured volume of chlorine solution into the well, circulate it until every fixture smells of bleach, hold it at least eight hours, flush, then have the water tested. First check the wellhead for a breach: chlorine does not fix a hole.

    How much bleach does it take to shock a well?

    It takes two numbers.     How often should you shock your well?

    It is not a schedule. NGWA states that shock chlorination is not routine well maintenance. Disinfect when the well has been opened or serviced, after flooding at the wellhead, and when a test comes back positive. If it fails again afterwards, the next step is a contractor rather than another jug.

    Does shock chlorination kill iron bacteria?

    It is the named treatment, and the result is often temporary. Iron bacteria live in slime coating the casing, screen and aquifer pores, and chlorine has to get through it. Where buildup is heavy the published answer is mechanical: a pump installer pulls the equipment and scrubs the casing before disinfecting.

    Can you disinfect a well without bleach?

    Unscented household bleach is what the homeowner guidance specifies. Michigan recommends against calcium hypochlorite tablets outright: they are built to dissolve in warm moving water, a well is cold and still, and tablets have lodged on submersible pumps and corroded them. Michigan also prefers bleach where groundwater is calcium-rich, because the alternative can plug the aquifer.

    What does it cost to shock a well?

    This guide carries no figure, because the answer is local and depends which version of the job you need. Three things drive it: whether your state requires a licensed professional, whether the pump must come out for scrubbing, and whether this is a first attempt or a repeat needing bulk displacement.
