    How to Get Rid of Nitrates in Well Water

    Nitrate doesn't announce itself in a glass of water, and it isn't part of a basic potability test. Here is where it actually comes from, what it does, and which treatments EPA and NGWA back.

    Nitrate has no taste, smell, or color, so a well can carry it without any sign at the tap.

    Testing for it is homeowner-feasible. So is running a point-of-use filter under one sink. Reverse osmosis and ion exchange are the treatments the National Ground Water Association names as actually working.

    Sizing a whole-house system is different. So is tracking down where the nitrate is coming from. Both are where a licensed professional takes over.

    Why nitrate is easy to miss

    EPA's drinking water regulations set the legal limit for nitrate at 10 milligrams per liter, measured as nitrogen. They also name where it comes from: "Runoff from fertilizer use; leaking from septic tanks, sewage; erosion of natural deposits" Source 1: U.S. EPA, Ground Water and Drinking Water, National Primary Drinking Water Regulations. A septic system is one of the sources EPA itself lists. This is not a connection this post is inventing.

    Nitrate also does not show up in a routine well test, unless it is specifically requested. The National Ground Water Association frames bacteria and nitrate as two separate, named checks: "Why is it important to test annually for bacteria and nitrate?" Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide, 2021 edition. A test that only screens for coliform bacteria answers a different question entirely.

    What it actually does, and to whom

    The danger is specific to infants. NGWA states that nitrate's greatest risk is its "ability to inhibit the blood's capacity to carry oxygen in infants under the age of about six months" Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide, 2021 edition. The condition is called methemoglobinemia, or blue baby syndrome. Formula mixed with nitrate-contaminated well water is the specific exposure NGWA names. Adults and older children are not the population this health limit is written for.

    NGWA also notes that nitrate is common in rural areas. These areas "tend to rely more on water wells for household drinking water" than towns and cities on a public system Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide, 2021 edition. That is the exact population this site writes for. Private-well households are the ones most likely to encounter this contaminant, and least likely to have a utility flagging it for them.

    What actually removes it, and what doesn't

    NGWA names two treatments that work: reverse osmosis and ion exchange. A point-of-use reverse osmosis unit, or a mixed-bed deionizer, fits a single tap. The kitchen sink, where water is used for drinking or cooking, is the usual spot. Ion exchange paired with a water softener can treat a whole house instead of one faucet Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide, 2021 edition. NGWA adds one more point: where possible, the best solution is removing the source, not treating around it.

    Boiling does not belong on that list. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's well owner guide states that boiling "concentrates minerals and salts" instead of removing them. It should be used only as an emergency measure against bacteria, never as a treatment for a chemical contaminant Source 3: Texas Well Owner Network, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Well Owner's Guide to Water Supply. Boiling water with nitrate in it does not fix the nitrate. It reduces the water and leaves the nitrate more concentrated than before.

    Which treatment scope makes sense depends on how the water gets used. A point-of-use unit under the kitchen sink treats only what comes out of that tap. That covers drinking water and formula, which is where the infant risk above actually lives. It does not touch bathing or laundry water, which carries no comparable health limit. A whole-house ion exchange system treats every tap at once. That costs more plumbing work, and it is the option worth sizing with a professional rather than installing alone. Neither choice is wrong. They answer different questions about which water in the house actually needs to be nitrate-free.

    Where nitrate in a well can come from

    EPA's list above names three sources: fertilizer runoff, septic tanks and sewage, and natural mineral deposits eroding into groundwater. NGWA describes the same picture from a different angle. Nitrate "is often used in fertilizer, and it also is a byproduct of animal and human waste" Source 2: National Ground Water Association, Well Owner's Guide, 2021 edition. That is two independent sources naming the same short list, not one authority repeating the other. Rural properties on well water are also often on septic systems, which is the direct overlap worth naming here. The University of Minnesota's septic program notes that septic tank effluent itself carries nitrogen at levels far above the drinking-water limit, before soil treatment has a chance to work on it Source 4: University of Minnesota Onsite Sewage Treatment Program, Septic Care and Maintenance. That is a mechanism, not a diagnosis. It explains why setback distance and a well-maintained septic system matter to a nearby well. It does not mean any specific reader's tank is the cause. A lab test naming the actual source is the only way to know, for a given property.

    Requirements vary by county. Your county health department has the final word on well and septic setback distances, permits, and what a positive nitrate test requires on your property.

    Common questions

    Does boiling water remove nitrate?

    No. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's well owner guide states that boiling concentrates minerals and salts rather than removing them, and recommends it only as an emergency measure against bacteria, not as a treatment for a chemical contaminant like nitrate.

    Can a septic system cause high nitrate in a nearby well?

    It can be one contributor. EPA's own drinking water regulations name leaking septic tanks and sewage alongside fertilizer runoff as sources of nitrate contamination. This does not diagnose any specific well; a lab test and a licensed well or septic professional confirm the actual source on a given property.
