    What Actually Removes Hard Water Stains

    A mild acid dissolves white mineral scale because of what scale actually is, and that same chemistry explains why it won't touch a rust stain.

    The chalky white crust on a faucet or showerhead is almost always calcium and magnesium carbonate. Those are the same minerals that make water "hard." A mild acid dissolves that crust, because acid reacts directly with carbonate minerals.

    • White or gray scale: mineral buildup from hard water. Give a mild acid a few minutes and it breaks the scale down.
    • Orange, brown, or reddish staining: usually iron, not hardness. Scrubbing it with the same acid treats the wrong problem.

    Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from rock underground. Left alone, those minerals come back out of the water and form a solid.     The same chemistry plays out underground on a much bigger scale. Limestone bedrock is calcium carbonate. A faucet does the same thing in a few weeks that an aquifer does over centuries.

    A thin layer of scale isn't purely bad news. The problem is scale that keeps building rather than staying thin.     Rust-colored stains are a different problem

    Not every bathroom stain is hard water. The University of Arizona's guide sorts stains by cause. Hardness and iron land in different rows of the same table. Hardness causes the staining around showers, toilet bowls, and faucet ends, and the guide's fix for that is a water softener.     EPA draws the same line from the federal side. Its standard for iron lists rusty color, sediment, and reddish or orange staining as the effects to watch for above 0.3 mg/L. Manganese is a related but different mineral, and it shows up instead as black or brown staining Source 3: U.S. EPA, Secondary Drinking Water Standards: Guidance for Nuisance Chemicals.     Before you reach for an acid cleaner

    Acid cleaners and chlorine bleach must never meet. Switching between an acid cleaner and a bleach-based cleaner on the same sponge or unrinsed surface is an easy mistake. Mixing them is dangerous, not just useless.

    Why a mild acid dissolves the scale

    Calcium carbonate reacts with acid. The acid breaks the mineral into carbon dioxide, water, and a soluble salt, and all three rinse away.     Plain white vinegar is a mild acid. It's the common household choice for this job. Soak the scaled part in it, or wrap it in a vinegar-soaked cloth. Give the reaction time to work before you scrub, then rinse the surface well with plain water. A stronger acid cuts scale faster, but faster isn't always better. It also reacts faster with skin, eyes, and any metal finish on the fixture, so a mild acid is the safer place to start.

    The same reaction has a real downside worth knowing first.     What to do once the stains are gone

    Removing existing scale doesn't stop it from coming back. If your water tests hard, prevention is a household decision. Make it with an actual number in hand, not a guess.     Common questions

    Does vinegar remove hard water stains?

    Yes. Hard water scale is almost always calcium and magnesium carbonate, and vinegar is a mild acid that reacts directly with carbonate minerals. Let it sit on the scale for a few minutes before you scrub, rather than scrubbing right away. It works more slowly on heavy, years-old buildup, but the underlying reaction is the same no matter how long the scale has been there.

    Why doesn't the same cleaner work on rust stains?

    Because rust-colored staining usually isn't hardness. A well owner guide from the University of Arizona lists shower and faucet staining from hardness separately from brownish, rusty staining caused by dissolved iron, with a different fix for each. An acid that dissolves calcium carbonate scale has no particular reason to touch iron staining, which is a different mineral entirely.

    Can I use an acid-based cleaner on natural stone?

    No. Marble, travertine, and limestone are calcium carbonate, the same mineral that makes up hard water scale, so an acid strong enough to dissolve scale etches those surfaces the same way. Keep acid cleaners off natural stone counters, floors, and tile, and rinse promptly if any splashes onto stone or grout nearby.
